What to consider before buying a home with a pool in Arizona.
When you live in Arizona, a pool can feel like a dream. It’s hot, it’s sunny, and the idea of stepping into your backyard and cooling off is pretty hard to beat. But as fun as a pool is, there’s also another side to think about before buying a home that has one.
Today, I want to break down the real pros and cons of owning a pool so you can decide if it fits your lifestyle, your budget, and what you realistically want as a homeowner.
The Pros
● It’s perfect for Arizona heat. Having a pool right outside your back door is a game-changer in the summer. You don’t have to pack up the car for a waterpark or borrow a friend’s pool because you’ve got your own.
● Pools are popular for resale. A lot of buyers in Arizona prefer homes with pools. So if you’re thinking ahead to the future, having a pool can help your home stand out when it’s time to sell. It’s not guaranteed to raise your price, but it definitely attracts more attention.
“A pool can be amazing, as long as you’re ready for the upkeep and the long-term costs.”
The Cons
● Ongoing upkeep and maintenance. This is the part most people don’t always think about. Pools need constant care. Whether you hire someone or do it yourself, expect about $100 to $200 a month, depending on the pool’s age, equipment, and size.
● Pool surfaces don’t last forever. Because of the heat and sun, pool surfaces wear out faster here. When they start cracking or you see what looks like rust spots coming through, that’s usually the rebar pushing through, and it means it’s time to resurface.
Resurfacing can run anywhere from $8,000 to $15,000, depending on the pool. It’s not a small repair, and it’s something buyers should be aware of before jumping in.
● It only makes sense if you’ll truly use it. A pool can be amazing, or it can be a hassle you never asked for. Think about your lifestyle. Do you picture yourself swimming often? Hosting friends? Relaxing outside? Or would it end up becoming something you rarely use but still pay for?
So, should you buy a home with a pool? There’s no wrong answer; it’s all about what fits your day-to-day life.
A pool can be an awesome feature if you’ll use it and you’re comfortable with the ongoing care. But if you’re unsure, or you already know upkeep isn’t your thing, you might be better off skipping it and enjoying someone else’s pool instead.
